Does this feel familiar?
Does avoiding one thing
start to shape your whole day?
“I plan everything around avoiding it.”
Travel, appointments or everyday activities may be arranged to stay away from a feared situation.
“My body reacts before I can explain.”
You may notice a racing heart, shaking, sweating or a strong urge to escape when a trigger appears.
“People tell me it is nothing.”
Feeling embarrassed or misunderstood can make it harder to talk about how much fear is affecting you.
A phobia involves intense fear of a particular object or situation and may lead to avoidance that interferes with life. Common examples include fears of heights, enclosed spaces, animals or injections. Professional assessment helps distinguish a phobia from other concerns.
Your way forward
Your fear deserves
a thoughtful approach.
Start by describing what you fear and what happens when you encounter it. Your therapist explores the effect on your life, discusses suitable support and agrees on goals with you. Any work involving a feared situation should be explained and planned collaboratively.
Understanding your fear
Explore triggers, avoidance and the activities you would like to feel more able to approach.
A personal support plan
Discuss appropriate therapy options, what they involve and how your preferences will inform the plan.
Everyday participation
Work towards goals that matter to you, such as attending appointments, travelling or taking part in family activities.
The Calmscious Therapy Model
Centred on you.
Guided by your needs.
Developed by Dr. Mehar Nithyan, the Calmscious Therapy Model is her own psychotherapy approach. At the first session, discuss how the proposed approach relates to your experiences and goals.
You can ask about the treatment recommended, the therapist’s relevant experience and other options. Your plan is reviewed in response to your needs; outcomes and the number of sessions vary.

Questions before you begin
A little more clarity.
Will I be forced to face my fear?
The approach and any proposed steps should be explained and agreed with you. You can ask questions and discuss concerns before deciding how to proceed.
Can therapy help with specific phobias?
Evidence-based options include CBT and exposure-based therapy. The right approach depends on assessment and the therapist’s training. Ask which treatment is recommended for your concern and whether specialist referral is appropriate.
Is fear the same as schizophrenia?
No. Fear and phobias are different from schizophrenia. If you are experiencing voices, unusual perceptions or major changes in thinking, seek a professional assessment rather than assuming these are symptoms of a phobia.
Are sessions available online and in Tamil?
Calmscious offers online and in-person sessions in Salem, with Tamil and English support. Confirm the language, format and suitable therapist with the team when arranging your appointment.
What are the fees and how many sessions will I need?
Confirm the current fee, duration and what is included before you book. The number of sessions depends on assessment, your goals and progress. You can discuss options before committing to further sessions.
Your next step
The next step can begin
with a conversation, at your pace.

The aim is to understand your needs and identify suitable treatment. No one should promise that a phobia will disappear in a fixed number of sessions.
